On June 21, 2025, a tragic hot air balloon crash in Brazil claimed the lives of 8 passengers and injured 13 others. The incident occurred in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, a region popular for its scenic balloon flights. A sudden fire broke out mid-air, reportedly caused by a malfunction in the balloon’s torch system.
The balloon, operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, was carrying 21 people. Moments after liftoff, flames erupted in the basket due to an ignition torch failure. The pilot instructed passengers to jump as the balloon descended quickly.
Thirteen passengers jumped and survived, while eight others—trapped due to rising altitude—either died from burns or impact injuries. It is the deadliest hot air balloon accident in Brazil in recent years.
Why Did the Balloon Catch Fire?
Early reports suggest that a propane torch used to control the balloon’s flight suddenly malfunctioned, igniting the basket. As some passengers jumped and lightened the load, the balloon gained altitude again, making it impossible for others to escape.
Investigations are now being conducted by:
CENIPA (Brazil’s Air Accident Investigation Agency)
Santa Catarina Fire Department
Civil Police
A full technical report is expected within 30 days.

⚠️ Should Brazil Regulate Balloon Tourism More Strictly?
Brazil’s tourism authority now faces urgent questions:
Were safety protocols followed?
Was the balloon equipment properly inspected?
Should balloon rides be suspended during festival seasons?
With two balloon crashes in one week, calls for better regulation are growing.
